macOS Sierra will be available to the public in its beta version later this summer. We have some thoughts about the direction Apple is going with Mac.
At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, this past June, Apple revealed that OS X was being renamed macOS. Craig Federighi intimated onstage that it just didn’t make sense to have iOS, tvOS and watchOS alongside an operating system named OS X. So, what are some of the best features?
The most significant feature with Sierra will be that you will now be able to access Siri from the desktop. Subsequently, Siri will be able to perform desktop related tasks. Once Siri is accessed through either the desktop icon or keyboard shortcuts, you can ask Siri for information on a number of different subjects including the weather, sports stats, restaurant recommendations and news.
You’ll also be able to have Siri dictate text through the messenger app and to perform system functions from accessing your mac’s memory to opening and exploring document files or photos. In addition, Siri lets you drag results from its window into other applications. This is especially useful for when you’re working on something in full screen and you want to avoid minimizing out to open up another app
Another great feature that will be included in the macOS Sierra is the Universal Clipboard. This feature allows you to copy and paste information between different devices as long as both devices are running under the same iCloud account. This is ideal for situations where there is content or images on one device (like an iPhone or iPad running iOS 10) that you want to be able to access from your desktop. This scenario also works in the reverse situation.
The new Optimized Storage feature with Sierra is one you’ll love if you’re running low on storage for your mac. This feature removes duplicate and unused files from your system. It also optimizes your local storage as well as what you store using the Cloud.
Optimized Storage also includes a feature that deletes anything in your trash folder that is over 30 days old and an option called “Reduce Clutter” that hilights files in your system that are taking up the most space.
These are just a few of the many great new features that Apple is launching with macOS Sierra. Others include updated features in music, photos, documents, messaging and editing. The full version of macOS Sierra will be available this fall.
