Common Computer Problems & How to Fix Them

Computers are remarkable machines—until they aren't. Every week at Computer Corner in Leesburg, we see the same frustrating problems walk through our door. The good news is that most common computer issues have practical solutions, and many can be fixed at home without professional help.

Here's a rundown of the most common computer problems we see and what to do about each one.

1. Computer Running Slow

Symptoms: Long boot times, apps taking forever to open, everything feels sluggish.

Fix: Start by restarting (not just sleeping). Then disable startup programs via Task Manager > Startup tab. Check for malware, free up disk space, and clear your browser cache. If none of that helps, a RAM or SSD upgrade can transform an older machine. See our full guide: How to Speed Up a Slow Computer.

2. Computer Freezes or Crashes

Symptoms: Screen locks up, apps become unresponsive, random reboots or blue screens of death (BSOD).

Fix: Check for overheating first—dust-clogged vents are a leading cause, especially in Florida's heat. Clean the vents with compressed air. Update your drivers and Windows. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (search for it in the Start menu) to check for RAM errors. If BSODs are frequent, note the error code—it usually points directly to the cause.

3. Computer Won't Turn On

Symptoms: Press the power button—nothing happens, or it powers on briefly and shuts off.

Fix: For desktops, check that the power cable is firmly connected and the power strip is working. For laptops, try removing the battery (if removable), holding the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnecting and powering on. If it still won't start, the issue could be a failed power supply, dead battery, or motherboard problem—time for professional diagnosis.

4. Strange Noises from the Computer

Symptoms: Clicking, grinding, or whirring sounds from inside the machine.

Fix: Clicking or grinding from a hard drive is a serious warning sign of imminent failure. Back up your data immediately and bring it in for evaluation. Fan noise can be caused by dust buildup—cleaning the fans with compressed air often resolves it. A rattling sound is usually a loose screw or cable touching a fan blade.

5. Internet Connection Problems

Symptoms: Can't connect to WiFi, connection drops frequently, or internet is slow on one device but not others.

Fix: Restart your router and modem (unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in). Update your network adapter drivers. Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter. If your connection is slow on all devices, the issue is with your ISP or router—not your computer. If only one device has issues, check its WiFi adapter settings or try forgetting and reconnecting to the network.

6. Virus or Malware Infection

Symptoms: Pop-ups, browser redirects, antivirus disabled, unexplained slowdowns.

Fix: Run Windows Defender or Malwarebytes for a full scan. For stubborn infections that disable security tools, professional removal is the safest option. See our guide: 10 Signs Your Computer Has a Virus. Computer Corner's virus removal service starts at $89.

7. Monitor or Display Issues

Symptoms: Black screen, flickering display, incorrect resolution, or no image.

Fix: For external monitors, check the cable connections at both ends and try a different cable. Update your graphics driver. Try right-clicking the desktop and selecting Display Settings to check resolution. If a laptop screen flickers, it could be a loose cable or failing backlight—these require professional repair.

8. Printer Won't Print

Symptoms: Print jobs get stuck in queue, printer shows as offline, or prints come out garbled.

Fix: First, restart both the printer and your computer. Clear the print queue (search "Printers & Scanners" > open your printer > Open queue > cancel all). Reinstall the printer driver from the manufacturer's website. For wireless printers, try removing and re-adding the printer and ensure it's on the same WiFi network as your computer.

9. Keyboard or Mouse Not Working

Symptoms: Keys don't respond, cursor jumps, wireless devices don't connect.

Fix: For wired devices, try unplugging and replugging, or using a different USB port. For wireless, replace the batteries and re-sync the device. Check Device Manager for driver errors. If a laptop keyboard has individual keys stuck or not working, liquid damage or physical wear may require a keyboard replacement.

10. Computer Overheating

Symptoms: Computer gets very hot, fan runs loudly, performance throttles or system shuts down unexpectedly.

Fix: Clean dust from all vents and fans using compressed air. Ensure the computer has proper airflow—don't use laptops on pillows or blankets. In Lake County's heat and humidity, dust accumulates faster than in cooler climates, so regular cleaning is especially important. If overheating persists after cleaning, the thermal paste on the CPU may need to be replaced.
